Staying Safe and Protecting Your Mental Health During Halloween

Oct 27
2 min read

Every year on October 31, people celebrate Halloween, a holiday that combines modern secular fun, Christian customs of remembering the dead, and old Celtic harvest rituals. Although physical risks remain, such as road accidents and minor injuries, Halloween is generally not more dangerous now than it was in the past. Managing overstimulation with strong personal boundaries and using grounding techniques when stress or fear increases are important ways to stay safe and protect your mental health during Halloween. It is a time to dress up in costumes, to party, or to trick-or-treat in nearby communities. However, over the years, Halloween has shifted for the worse; some see it as a chance to be mischievous and do harmful things, intending to get away with it by wearing a costume (disguise).

For decades, parents have been encouraged to keep their children safe by inspecting candy and treats during their trick-or-treating adventure. These fun celebrations took a serious turn, where some evil doers deliberately lace pieces of candy or treats with drugs (e.g., fentanyl). Warnings have been sent out throughout the years from Federal and Local Law Enforcement agencies regarding the possibility of the lethal drug fentanyl being passed around in Halloween candy, and to be aware by inspecting every item. Although it's not always the case, it's always smart to be safe.

Resources like History.com offer practical coping strategies that can help individuals manage the Halloween craze. Practical Mental Health & Coping Strategies:

  • Plan Ahead: To avoid unpleasant shocks, familiarize yourself with party settings, routes, and event schedules in advance.

  • Set Clear Boundaries: Refuse to attend parties, haunted houses, or social events that truly upset or frighten you. You don't have to justify your refusal to anyone.

  • Maintain Daily Routines: Maintain your usual eating, sleeping, and exercise routines to help your nervous system know that you are safe and stable.

  • Use Grounding Techniques: If anxiety or panic strikes, try deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, or the 5-4-3-2-1 sensory method (concentrate on items you can see, touch, hear, smell, and taste).

  • Limit Scary Media: Avoid scary movies, jump scares, or highly haunted environments if they make you feel anxious, stressed, or trigger flashbacks.

  • Swap Scary Decor for Fall Themes: Use comfortable, non-threatening seasonal decorations like flowers, pumpkins, and fall foliage to keep your living area.

Be well and safe this Halloweeeeeeeeeen!
